Description of the Project:

Project to augment water supply for Greater Colombo area in phased programmes of development.

Project comprised of:

  • Intake with capacity of 126,000 cu.m/day, treatment plant capacity of 60,000 cu.m/day; clear water pumps to deliver 60,000 cu.m/day and a high level reservoir of 15,000 cu.m/day capacity.
  • Raw water transmission main comprised of 1,000 mm dia DI pipe 2,410 m long; clear water transmission main comprising 1,000 mm dia DI pipe 6,700 m long,., transmission mains from High level reservoir to Bandaragama – 1,200 mm dia DI pipes, length 10,300 m; Bandaragama to Panadura 800 mm dia DI pipes length 9.700, Panadura to Moratuwa 800 mm dia DI pipes length 10,300 m.
  • Distribution pipe line covered 150 km with 20,000 individual connections made.
  • In addition, offices and staff quarters for operation and maintenance of system and required infrastructure were provided.
Scope of Work:
  • Reviewing previous studies and other projects being implemented to assess implications on project, verified existing water demand, reviewed UDA Greater Colombo Metropolitan regional structure plan, assisted to update water balance scenarios for 2010 and 2020.
  • Studying outcome of River Basin Studies, reviewed data on topography, geology & soils, assisted in the review of capacities of intake, treatment plant, storage & transmission,
  • Inspected all installations, supervising day to day activities of the site laboratories, checking work program for all quarries & borrow pits and ensuring materials meet specifications.
  • Assisted to update distribution models for Moratuwa & Panadura, carried out preliminary analysis of hydraulic network, Assisted in preliminary costing of facilities, assisted to prepare plan for construction phasing, assisted to develop design criteria.
  • Engaged in construction supervision comprising progress monitoring and control of construction activity, quality control, approval of interim certificates and extra works, preparation of maintenance manuals and handing over of works.
