Description of the Project: Construction of 5 green field domestic airports in S.H. Funadhoo, D.H. Khuldavadoo,T.H. Timarafushi and G.H. Vilinghili islands for domestic transport and that of tourists, residents and cargo. The Airports were to be designed for landing and for use of passenger aircraft including Bombardier 8Q 300 and Lear Jet 60 XR. The facilities at each airport included an airstrip, a runway, a taxiway, an apron, air field lighting for visual landing/ takeoff, air side internal roads and car parks, control tower, air conditioned passenger terminal buildings with separate arrivals and departures sections, baggage handling facilities, administration office, restaurants, rest rooms and cargo terminal, fire and rescue station, meteorological stations, fuel farms, power supply, water supply, sewerage and solid waste disposal facilities, telecommunication systems, security fencing, access roads & land side roads network, street lighting, staff accommodation.
Scope of Work: ECL services include, (a) assessment of the passenger and cargo volumes considering to the other neighboring domestic airports, (b) conceptual designs for consensus of the Client and officials of the Maldives aviation authorities, (c) detailed designs of each component conforming to ICAO standards for airside designs, BS standards for all buildings and other infrastructure facilities and services, (d)preparation of specifications, (e) preparation of Bills of Quantities and cost estimates and (f) preparation of tender documents conforming FIDIC conditions of contract. The detailed air side designs included the air strip, runway, taxi way, apron, air side navigation lighting for visual landing/ take off, apron lighting, control tower, air conditioned terminal buildings with separate arrivals and departures sections, baggage handling facilities, administration office, restaurants, rest rooms and cargo terminal, fire and rescue, power house, meteorological stations, fuel farms and power supply, internal roads, and car park. The detailed landside designs included:
  1. Water Supply System - conceptual and detailed designs of sea water intakes, treatment system with RO plant and chlorination, clear water storage facilities, pump houses and distribution mains for water supply and firefighting systems.
  2. Sewerage Disposal Systems - assessment of capacity requirements and sewerage disposal options, material selection options, selection of sites for sea outfall for treated sewage, preparation of conceptual and detailed designs.
  3. Solid Waste Disposal – Assessed types of waste to be generated, and prepared detailed designs for incinerating waste.
  4. Infrastructure Designs - Airport access road, car park, street lighting, and jetty for sea travel.
