Description of the Project: Enhancement of environmental protection in the coastal areas and contribute to poverty reduction among fishing communities. The main project objective is to establish integrated management of coastal resources to improve their sustainability. Areas in which the project was implemented were, Bar reef, Negombo, Lunawa, Mawella, Kalametiya, Maduganga, Habaraduwa.
Scope of Work: Assisted to establish community coordinating committees to promote community participation in the coastal resources management process, assisted to develop special area management plans, implemented management interventions, developed and implement measures to protect areas supporting high biodiversity, measured water quality in Negambo, Mawella, Lunawa and Kalametiya lagoons and recommended mitigation measures, explored methods to enhance lagoon fisheries, assisted to establish solid waste management and composting programs, provision of sanitation systems, assistance with liquid waste management systems for public facilities, assistance to develop industrial pollution management programs, prepared proposals to promote sustainable use of fish after harvesting, provided training in proper fish handling methods, reorganised existing fish selling centres, formulated guidelines and assisted implementing agencies to implement micro enterprise activities, conducted micro enterprise training and introduced income generating programs and livelihood development programs.
