Description of the Project: Project to improve the storm drainage conditions of the Kurunegala town centre and environs. Priority flood prone areas include sections between Bodhiraja Mw and Waan Ela, public market area, Baroos Park and Perera Gardens, Wilgoda, Wellangoda and South Lake Roads, Thabrew Lane, Heraliya Watte and Moonamale Watte Roads, Mohandiram Weeratunga Mw, confluence of Boo and Waan elas etc. The project is being carried out in three stages – feasibility study, design stage and construction supervision stage.
Scope of Work: As stage I the consultants carried out feasibility study comprising extensive socio-economic field studies among 150 households, data collection from DS and DN offices to identify affected population their socio-economic status, causes of flooding. Held focus group discussion with relevant UC officials, selected members of the public to determine solutions, identified current land use and advised design team on appropriate solutions to meet needs of beneficiaries. Surveys carried out included assessment of drains and streams, identified sub catchments and catchment characteristics, hydrological and hydraulic studies, environmental assessment, prepared conceptual & detailed designs, preliminary and detailed estimates, specifications, carried out an economic analysis and presented a Feasibility Report and carried out supervision of widening & deepening of canals / drains, strengthening of embankments using gabions and sheet piles, widening of culverts, reinstatement of road sections.
